Introduction: Part C--FROM MAGAZINES

One hundred one articles from Educational Technology and T.H.E. Journal are reviewed in this section. Educational Technology is a magazine published by Educational Technology Publications that prints articles on WBI and other technology related issues. Forty-five articles from Educational Technology are included. T.H.E. Journal (Technological Horizons in Education Journal) is produced by T.H.E. Journal L.L.C. every month except July. This magazine includes feature articles on the uses of technology in education. Fifty-six feature articles from T.H.E. Journal appear here.

The articles in these two magazines discuss ideas on Internet-based learning environments from various perspectives and report developmental projects in educational contexts (see Table 3). Only two of them (2%) adopted quantitative or qualitative true or quasi experiments for their research methodology; forty-two articles (41.5%) were developmental studies in which the design and development strategies of Internet- or other network-based education were reported; fourteen (14%) were evaluation studies in which specific Internet-based or similar types of online courses were evaluated in a rather structured way; and the final forty-three papers (42.5%) discussed ideas and positions regarding Internet- or network-based instruction. When compared with the articles from the refereed international journals in part A, the articles from these two magazines did not report as many rigorous research studies in the field. The articles from Educational Technology tended to discuss related ideas and present arguments of the authors, whereas those from T.H.E. Journal tended to report online course-development projects. Out of 101 papers, 77 articles (76%) discussed Internet-based education specifically, 11 papers (11%) reported the use of computer conferencing in network-based learning environments, and the final 13 papers (13%) discussed Internet-based education along with other technologies.
