Penn State Counselor Education Programs began in 1958, and since that time, consistent top 10 national rankings in US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT (ranked 8th in 2007)reflect the program's national recognition for providing the highest quality training and professional leadership. The long history of outstanding professional accomplishments of both faculty and graduates is promoted by the programs's emphasis on integrating counseling applications with high levels of scholarship and a service commitment to the profession and to a multicultural society.

Graduates are employed throughout the country and abroad in counseling, teaching, research, consulting, and related positions devoted to the highest qualities of practice, scholarship, service, and leadership. Faculty and graduates also publish numerous articles, books, and hold major leadership offices in state and national professional organizations.

The Ph.D. degree program in Counselor Education and the Master's programs in Elementary and Secondary School Counseling are nationally accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The Master's program in Rehabilitation Counseling is nationally accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE).
