Davin Carr-Chellman is assistant professor of education with a joint appointment in the Adult Education Program, Department of Learning and Performance Systems, and in the Educational Leadership Program, Department of Education Policy Studies. He joined the faculty at Penn State in 2005 and has an ongoing research agenda focused on ethics, ethical development, educational philosophy, informal learning, communication and learning in non-formal environments, and qualitative research methods. Dr. Carr-Chellman has more than 12 years of university level teaching experience, focusing primarily on ethics, communication, and adult education. Davin received his Ph.D. from Penn State in Adult Education with a focus on ethical development in non-formal and community based contexts. His B.A. is in philosophy with Highest Distinction (Penn State) and his M.A. is in philosophy (Penn State) with a focus on intellectual history, American pragmatism, and the Continental European tradition.
Davin has produced a textbook on ethics, Ethics: Sources and Thoughts on the Good Life, and was most recently the co-editor of a special issue of Educational Technology Magazine examining the ethical implications of the use of technology in education.
Davin has been recognized as a dedicated teacher, earning nominations for the Vice-President’s Award for Outstanding Service to Students (2004-2005) and the College of the Liberal Arts Outstanding Teacher Award (2009). In 2009, Davin was given the Cynthia Finch Award for Teaching Excellence by the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences. Additionally, Davin has been recognized three times by the East Halls Residence Life Association with their Impact on First Year Students award (2008, 2010, and 2011).
Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Carr-Chellman served as the assistant director of the Center for Ethics and Religious Affairs at Penn State, where he developed educational programs focused on character development, community service, and interfaith engagement.
