Curriculum and Instruction


The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C I) offers undergraduate degree and certification programs in teacher education and graduate degree programs at the master's and doctoral levels.


Undergraduate Degrees


At the undergraduate level, the department offers two bachelor of science degrees: one in Elementary and Kindergarten Education and one in Secondary Education.

The graduates may qualify for an "Instructional I" teaching certificate issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in one or more of the following areas:

  • Early Childhood
  • Elementary Education
  • Biological Science
  • Chemistry
  • Earth and Space Science
  • English/Communication
  • Environmental Science
  • French
  • General Science
  • German
  • Latin
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Russian
  • Social Studies
  • Spanish

 

Graduate Degrees

 

At the graduate level, the department offers master's degree (i.e., M.S. and M.Ed.) and doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D.) programs in C I with emphases in eight areas:

  • Curriculum and Supervision
  • Early Childhood Education
  • Elementary Education
  • Language, Culture & Society (Language & Literacy Education, Social Studies Education, World Languages Education)
  • Mathematics Education
  • Science Education

 

The department also offers an M.Ed. with an emphasis in Instructional Leadership at the Great Valley Graduate Center.

 

Faculty

 

C I faculty make significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in educational theory and practice through research and scholarly activities. They serve many customers including, school personnel, professional and learned societies, and educational agencies.

We have emerging partnerships with schools through the Central Pennsylvania Holmes Local Partnership and other department outreach activities.

 

Mission

 

The mission of C&I faculty is to prepare exemplary teachers, teacher educators, and educational researchers in curriculum, instruction and supervision, and related disciplines. We seek to promote a thriving intellectual community, recognized for the highest quality research and scholarly contributions; exemplary undergraduate and graduate teaching; and noteworthy professional service and leadership.
