Secondary Education Social Studies Teaching Option

SS ED Concentrations and Recommended Courses

The SS ED option requires all students to complete 15-credit concentration (Citizenship, Civics & Government, Economics, Geography, or Social Sciences). Any exceptions or alternative arrangements need to be approved through formal academic petition (which must be written and submitted in consultation with your academic adviser).

Most concentration areas require the student to choose course selections. Furthermore, the option requires all students to choose two upper-level History course selections. This web page details the requirements for each concentration area and for History coursework and also provides lists of recommended courses that can be taken to meet the requirements. These recommended courses reflect topics and content mostly common taught in secondary grades. However, courses not on this recommended list also may be chosen (please consult with your academic adviser).
