Description of procedures for admission to LCS emphasis area

Admissions to C&I Graduate Programs with an LCS Emphasis

Although graduate admission at Penn State is offered through both the individual program of study and the graduate school, the initial application is submitted to Curriculum and Instruction. Applicants applying for the LCS emphasis area should indicate this on the C&I application.

C&I admissions requirements are as follows:

  • Applicants must hold either (1) a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited institution or (2) a postsecondary degree that is equivalent to a U.S. baccalaureate degree earned from an officially recognized degree-granting international institution.

  • Scores from the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) are required for admission. Applicants for the doctoral degree are strongly encouraged to take the GRE. Moreover, students with excellent academic records who which to be considered for fellowships, scholarships, and assistantships should take the GRE as a matter of course.

  • Students with appropriate course and professional backgrounds will be considered for admission, subject to the limitation of program facilities. For admission to the profession degree programs leading to the M.Ed., teaching or equivalent experience and at least 18 credits are recommended.

  • Applications to the M.S. and M.Ed. programs are considered as they are received and admission is available each semester. The application deadline for the LCS Ph.D. emphasis area is December 15. Decisions are made by the end of February for fall-only admission. Funding decisions are made during the spring semester for the coming academic year.

For more information, including further admissions requirements for international applicants, please consult the Penn State Graduate Degree Admissions Bulletin and the C&I application process site.
