K - 12 Reading Specialist Certification
K-12 Reading Specialist Certification
Teachers and other educators can achieve reading specialist certification through a newly organized set of experiences designed to provide participants with a working knowledge of, as well as direct experience with, a variety of assessment and instructional practices in reading and writing education. Unlike traditional programs with a similar focus, this course of study offers candidates in-depth considerations of linguistic, cognitive, socio cultural, and critical perspectives on working with literacy learners in and out of school settings. A practicum experience is required during a six-week summer session, following the completion of the assessment course. The Pennsylvania Department of Education, the International Reading Association, and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education endorse our program. Candidates who complete the course of study with a B+ or better grade point average and achieve a passing score on the Level II PRAXIS examination for reading specialist are eligible to apply for Pennsylvania reading specialist certification K-12.
