Interested in graduate study in science education? You've come to the right place. We offer the M.S., M.Ed., and Ph.D. degrees. Graduate students who have previously earned undergraduate degrees in science fields have the option to pursue teaching certification as part of any of these degrees.

A good place to learn more about the aspects of science education that interest us is our Faculty profiles page. We encourage prospective students to visit: see Contact Us. A typical visit will include meetings with faculty and other graduate students, and we have some funding to help with out-of-area travel.

Students entering SCIED graduate degree options are admitted through the Department of Curriculum and Instruction graduate admissions process. The application deadline for the SCIED Ph.D. emphasis area is December 15 for Fall admission, with decisions made by the end of February. Applications may be submitted at other times of the year, but graduate funding opportunities are likely to be more limited then.

Financial Aid

Financial support is provided through a variety of research and teaching opportunities. Graduate students can compete for fellowships and research and teaching assistantships. Most graduate assistantships cover the cost of graduate tuition and provide a monthly stipend as well.

Funded research projects provide opportunities for financial support through work in K-12 public schools, teaching professional development, and various science education initiatives at Penn State. Contact individual science education faculty members for more information on current opportunities. In addition, many science education students receive support from other departments and projects in others Colleges.

More information about graduate funding is available at the Penn State Graduate School.

Assignments of teaching and research assistantships are made after admission to the graduate program.
