Dorothy H. Evensen, Ph.D.
Senior Scientist, CSHE
Professor of Education & Professor-in-Charge of the Higher Education Program, EPS
Dr. Evensen began her work at Penn State in 1991 subsequent to earning a Ph.D. in Applied Psychology from New York University. From 1991 to 1998 she directed the Reading Specialist Certification Program through the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Evensen joined the Higher Education Program in 1999 and is serving as Professor-In-Charge (2007-2010). She teaches courses in Qualitative Research, College Teaching, Legal Issues in Higher Education, and Proposal Writing.
Dr. Evensen's research activities relate to learning and literacy development in the professions, particularly focusing on law, medicine, teaching, and engineering. She has co-edited two books: Problem-based learning: A research perspective on learning interactions (2000, Erlbaum) with Cindy Hmelo-Silver of Rutgers University; and Reconsidering the role of university-based reading clinics in the new age of literacy (1999, JAI Press) with the late Peter Mosenthal, who worked for many years at Syracuse University. Reports on her research have appeared in numerous professional and academic journals. These include “A qualitative study of six medical students in a problem-based curriculum: Toward a model of situated self-regulation” that appeared in the December 2001 issue of the Journal of Educational Psychology, and which was awarded the Outstanding Research Publication of 2001 Award by Division I of the American Educational Research Association. Much of Dr. Evensen's research has been sponsored by the Law School Admissions Council--a three-year study of study groups and study practices in law school, and, with James Stratman of University of Colorado at Denver, an extensive study of law student's reading and reasoning using multiple cases. At present, Dr. Evensen is collaborating with faculty in EPS and at the Dicksinson School of Law to study the pipline experiences of African American lawyers.
Dr. Evensen was a 1994-95 Spencer postdoctoral fellow. She serves on Penn State's Faculty Senate and has twice chaired the College of Education's Faculty Council.
