Assistant Professor of Education (Special Education)

Beginning

Fall Semester, 2013 or Spring Semester, 2014

Appointment Conditions

A 36-week tenure track appointment will be made at the assistant professor level starting August of 2013 or January of 2014; summer appointments in research and/or teaching may be possible. Responsibilities:

•   Teach and advise both undergraduate and graduate students.

•   Develop a successful well-defined program of research.

•   Generate external funding for the support of related research, training, or outreach efforts.

•   Work collaboratively with faculty in academic programs throughout the University

•   Provide service to the college, profession, and community.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate or ABD (with defense date before the start of the appointment) in Special Education or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of two years professional experience with individuals with special needs and/or

individuals at risk for special education services.

  • Evidence of, or strong potential for, significant research and publications.
  • Evidence of a strong background in research design.
  • Evidence of a commitment to excellence in teaching and advising including a willingness to consider teaching in online environments, where appropriate, along with an interest in the use of modern technology, commensurate with experience.
  • Experience in working with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to collegiality and collaboration.  Evidence of the capability to undertake interdisciplinary and collaborative research.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

Applicants should have expertise in either autism, applied behavior analysis, effective (explicit) instruction, and/or science technology engineering and mathematics education (STEM).

Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education (EPCSE):

Five programs constitute this Department: Counselor Education, Educational Psychology, School Psychology, Special Education, and Rehabilitation and Human Services.  The Graduate Program in Special Education was ranked 17th in the nation in the most recent ranking of 1,300 special education graduate programs.  The EPCSE department is a dynamic group of College faculty, staff, and students within Penn State's College of Education who:

  • work to develop effective ways of teaching and evaluating both children and adults in a variety of educational settings across the life span;
  • are a community of scholars that base their teaching and practice on cutting edge research in the field;
  • are committed to the recruitment of excellent students;
