How to apply:

The process of applying for admission to graduate school at Penn State requires the following application materials, some of which are submitted to The Graduate School (items 1 and 2 below), and others that should be sent directly to the Counseling Psychology graduate program (items 3 through 10):

  1. An official GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICATION (available on-line at the Graduate School Admissions and Program Information Portal).
  2. Application fee (Click here for information).

    The following materials should be sent directly to the Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program Admissions Committee December 15.

  3. Official transcripts (two (2) copies). 
  4. GRE Test Results (PSU Institution Code: 2660 and Department Code: 2005). The applicant must submit the official results from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to the Counseling Psychology Program, 327 CEDAR Building, University Park, PA 16802. Advanced subject results are optional. The Educational Testing Service, Rosedale Road, Princeton, New Jersey 08542,can provide information about testing centers and dates, or check the GRE website. Applications are considered incomplete without GRE scores. To insure that the scores will reach us in time for consideration of your application, please schedule the exam no later than October 15. Test scores that are more than five (5) years old will not be accepted.
  5. TOEFL Test Scores (if applicable) (PSU Institution Code:2660 and our Department Code:99). International applicants whose first language is not English or who have not received a baccalaureate or master's degree from an institution in which the language of instruction is English must submit a TOEFL score of 550 (paper test), a score of 213 (computer-based test), a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section (internet-based test), or a minimum composite score of 6.5 on the IELTS.
  6. Personal Data Sheet (Adobe Acrobat form view and print)
  7. Statement of Career Goals (#13 on personal data sheet)
  8. Autobiographical Statement (#14 on personal data sheet)
  9. Three letters of recommendation (no special forms required)
  10. Resume
