Program requirements of Counseling Psychology program.

Counseling Psychology Program Requirements

This program normally requires three to four years of full-time coursework beyond the master's degree, plus a 1-year internship. It is the student's responsibility to meet any requirements posed by the Graduate School, such as residency, and to keep her/his advisor informed about progress through the program.

Requirement 1: Statistics and Research Design (15 credits)

  • Six hours of statistics
  • Three hours of research design.
  • Three hours of measurement
  • Three hours of elective coursework.
  • Foreign language competencies as required by the Graduate School is met by completion of six of the fifteen hours specified above.

Requirement 2: General Psychology Foundations (15 credits)

The core psychology curriculum is defined as 15 graduate level credits in psychology with at least one three-credit course in each of five areas.

  1. Biological Bases of Behavior
  2. Cognitive-Affective Bases on Behavior
  3. Social Bases of Behavior
  4. Individual Differences
  5. Human Development

Requirement 3: Counseling Psychology (27 credits)

  • Students are required to take three credits each in Advanced Counseling Theory, Group Psychotherapy, Family Systems Therapy, Cross Cultural Counseling, Professional Issues, Career Counseling, and Assessment, and six credits in Research Practicum

 

Requirement 4: Practica and Supervision (17 credits)

  • Students complete practica their first year in the program in the department's training clinic (the CEDAR Clinic) and at the University's Career Service Center. During the second year, students take practicum at the University's Counseling Center (CAPS), and an off-campus practicum is taken for three credits during the third year. Advanced practicum will be completed off-campus at sites such as Centre Volunteers in Medicine (a non-profit clinic serving the needs of the medically underserved) or the Meadows (an in-patient psychiatric facility).
  • Supervision of counseling is presented in two phases. The first or didactic phase is offered during the Fall semester for 1 credit. The second or practicum phase is taken during the following Spring Semester for 3 credits.
