Career Counseling Curriculum Guide and Course Schedule

The career counseling emphasis in the Counselor Education M.Ed. Program is a two-year program with a fall semester start date. Students are required to complete 60-credits, including a one semester internship under the supervision of the university Internship Coordinator and an internship supervisor.

WF ED 471 Training in Industry and Business (3) Appraisal of training functions and development of competencies in work analysis, design, development, delivery, and evaluation of training.

WF ED 542 Social and Economic Foundations of Workforce Education and Development (3) Review of labor force, demographic and economic concepts, measures, and models.

PSY 597B Work Motivation: Theories, Research, and Organizational Interventions (3) An in-depth review of theories and studies that predict and evaluate interventions designed to increase work motivation and/or work attitudes.

Master’s students in the Career Counseling emphasis are required to complete the Master’s Paper (CN ED 596) and Master’s Project connected to their internship classes. The Master’s Paper is a proposal, including an introduction, literature review, intervention design, and evaluation plan. The Master’s Project encompasses the Master’s Paper (proposal) and the actual implementation and evaluation of the intervention done in the internship experience. Thus, the Master’s Project involves reviewing the literature, developing a career intervention (e.g., career guidance unit, small group), implementing it in their internship setting, and evaluating its effectiveness.

Our program follows a cohort model. Students are admitted once a year and begin study in the Fall. They complete Fall and Spring semesters in Year 1, summer session between Year 1 and 2, and complete Fall and Spring semesters in Year 2.
