Secondary School Counseling Emphasis
The secondary school counseling emphasis in the Counselor Education (M.Ed.) Master's Program at Penn State is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). The curriculum is also consistent with standards and guidelines of national professional associations.
The purpose of this emphasis is to prepare counselor trainees:

for certification by the State of Pennsylvania and to work as school counselors in middle schools and high schools

to function effectively in comprehensive, developmental counseling programs in schools

for multiple school counselor roles

to effectively assist middle school and high school students with their educational development, career development, and personal/social development

to serve a diverse population with diverse needs
A well rounded program is attained through emphasis on:

addressing middle and high school student's academic, personal, and professional development

individual counseling, family counseling, group counseling, conflict resolution, group guidance and psychoeducation, crisis response, student appraisal, case management, consultation, advocacy, program development and evaluation, and coordination and administration of counseling programs

addressing the systemic nature of schools, focusing upon the benefits of counseling for all students, parents, schools, and communities

multicultural counseling, educational equity, and closing opportunity gaps among groups of students

incorporating counseling theory, skills and techniques into experiential learning modes including role-playing and genuine counseling situations through practicum at the CEDAR Clinic and supervised internship in middle and high schools
