Preparing Professor Researchers for Evidence-based Practices (PPREP)
What is PPREP?
PPREP is a federally funded program that provides financial and academic support to full-time doctoral students in Special Education at Penn State.
Who should apply?
PPREP is an appropriate program for individuals who
Have 3 years teaching experience with individuals with special education needs
Interested in earning a PhD in Special Education in any of the following areas: General Special Education; Mild or Severe Disabilities (including Autism and related syndromes); Learning Disabilities, Mental Retardation, or Serious Emotional Disturbances; Early Intervention; or Assessment
Seeking a faculty position in an institution of higher education after graduation
Why would I want to be a faculty member in Special Education?
By working as a faculty member in special education in an institution of higher education, you will have the opportunity to work with the teachers of tomorrow. University faculty enjoy a flexible schedule in which they have the freedom to pursue intellectual interests, while at the same time contributing to improved services for students with special education needs. There are often significant opportunities to travel both nationally and internationally, and to earn additional income through writing and consultation activities.
The demand for qualified special education faculty already exceeds supply, and the demand for qualified special education faculty will continue to grow in the 21st century.
What activities are included in the doctoral program?
The doctoral program at Penn State is based upon the Criteria of the Next Environment (CONE) model; graduate students learn and have opportunities to practice the skills expected of Special Education faculty. In addition, students supported via PPREP participate in an orientation seminar and a seminar focusing on Research-to-Practice issues in the field.
What financial support is available?
An annual scholarship of $18,000 (plus optional 1/2 GA @ $13,000)
money to support a pre-admission visit (up to $500) to campus (to meet faculty, students, etc.) (Come talk with us before you make a decision!)
a one-time relocation allowance ($2000)
support for professional travel (up to $1000)
textbook allowance ($300 per semester, $200 in summer)
research allowance ($500)
health insurance through Penn State's student plan is available with the GA only
In addition, there is financial assistance available from the Work/Life Programs Office for those students who are also parents. There is also a faculty and peer/mentor support to facilitate socialization to university life.
