Research Interests
Dr. Lee specializes in creating effective learning environments for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, who often fail to initiate and remain engaged in academic tasks. This lack of engagement often results in poor academic and social outcomes for these students.
Dr. Lee's research covers three related areas. First, he works to develop reliable assessment methods to determine the function of problem behavior within a social context. These methods of assessment are used to develop individualized intervention plans that address the purpose of problem behavior. Second, Dr. Lee investigates methods to increase task engagement for students with emotional and behavioral difficulties. Grounded in the theory of behavioral momentum, his work examines the effects of modifying academic and social environments in order to produce enhanced persistence in the face of competing sources of reinforcement. Finally, he examines methods to better train practitioners in classroom management strategies. This evidence-based approach to practitioner training relies on the research base of curriculum-based measurement, explicit instruction, as well as best practice in behavior support.
