Internships
The Internship Requirement
Practical experience is perhaps the most important aspect of any preparation program in student affairs. Through actually working in the field, students learn to apply theory and concepts they are learning in the classroom to real life situations. They also gain a better sense of their particular areas of interest within student affairs and have a chance to develop the skills they will need to be successful in the field.
The Penn State program requires students to complete at least six credit hours of internship in at least two different areas of student affairs and that they gain experience in the following skill areas: individual student development, programming, staff development and supervision, and administration. To gain the most from their internship experience, students are expected to work with a diverse clientele.
Internships, both paid and unpaid, are available in various student affairs offices at Penn State during the academic year and during summer. To diversify their experience base, students are also encouraged to pursue summer internships at colleges and universities other than Penn State. Faculty assist students in identifying appropriate internship opportunities. For more information view the internship manual.
