Graduate assistants (GAs) work 20 hours per week (half-time), 18 weeks per semester. These positions are two-year appointments and contracts are renewed at the end of the first year upon completion of a satisfactory performance review. GAs must enroll in 9-12 credits per semester during the academic year and may not accept concurrent employment outside the University unless granted permission from the assistantship department head and the Higher Education & Student Affairs program coordinators.
All graduate assistantship positions provide a generous compensation package, including:
- A full tuition waiver (covers in-state or out-of-state tuition for the academic year and up to nine credits of summer
coursework)
- A stipend (approximately $16,920 per academic year, paid monthly over 10 months August-May)
- An 80% subsidy of the annual premium cost for Penn State’s Graduate Assistant and Graduate Fellow Insurance Plan (medical, dental, and vision)
*Exceptions are noted below.
- Residence Life: This is a live-in position that requires 25 hours a week. Residence Life GAs receive a quarter-time stipend (approximately $8,460 per academic year), as well as a fully furnished on-campus apartment, meal plan, and parking pass.
- Union and Student Activities - Operations: This is a wage payroll position and does not include a tuition waiver or insurance subsidy.
