Editing Issues Help

The editing Tab - Styles, hard and soft returns, using lists, links, pasting in text from other programs

Editing Issues (Also the November 2008 Session)

General Items

It is helpful to use two browser tabs.

NOTE:  If you shorten the width of the browser window, the flow of the layout appears to change.

A new “Editor's Help” link has been added to the bottom of each main page and is active when you are logged in. The link leads to the Web Site Maintenance Help page. This page opens up in a new browser window. If you prefer to have it open in a new tab, use a right mouse click and select “Open Link in New Tab”.

Are you using Firefox?

You could encounter problems using other browsers.

Hard and soft returns

There are two types of returns in html, a hard return and a soft return.
  1. The hard return puts in a new <p> tag or a new paragraph, which skips a line and moves the cursor to the beginning of a new line. For this, hit “shift” and “enter” at the same time.
  2. The soft return puts in a <br /> tag and does not create a new paragraph. It moves the cursor to the beginning of a new line, but does not skip a line.

How to get out of A LINK:

If you have a link at the end of the line and you hit return, you get a new line, but then you are still in the link. To start a new line without the link, do this:

  • Put your cursor at the end of the line and hit “shift” and “enter” at the same time.
  • Start typing the new line – you will still be in the link.
  • Select the new line and then hit the “remove link” icon (earth with broken chain)

Formatting Styles

  • This page shows you all the styles you can use.
  • You can apply more than 1 style at a time to text. And if you continue to add styles to the same text, they will pile up.
  • To add a style to the text, just highlight it and select the desired style.
  • To change the style, select the text again, and then go to the style drop-down menu and DESELECT the style that has the triangle next to it.
  • Blue and purple text on the site identify links and visited links respectfully. These are styles that are controlled by the link and the actions of the users. Adding a link to text with any other styles will make them blue.
  • Links and style tag issues: The tags should be <style> <a href>Text</a></style> Sometimes it gets mixed up and needs to be corrected in the source code.

Try to have an “H2” style on every page.

How to get out of A STYLE:

If you are at the end of the line and you hit return, you get a new line, but your text may still reflect the old style. To start a new line without the style, do this:
  • Put your cursor at the end of the line and hit “shift” and “enter” at the same time.
  • Start typing the new line – you will still be in the style.
  • Select the new line and then deselect the style from the style drop down menu.

The LITTLE Text

At times, it appears that the text is smaller than it should be on the site. This is because there is no style applied to it. There are two ways to make sure this text is the right size.

Select the text and then select the “normal” style from the style drop down menu

OR

Put your cursor in front of the very first line of text and hit “shift” and “enter” at the same time.

Links:

Adding anchors and linking to anchors:

Anchors are links that target other sections of a page.
  • Identify the places within the page where you want to link to.
  • For each place, do the following:
    • Put your cursor in the targeted place, but DO NOT select any text.
    • Select the "anchor" tag from the editor bar
    • Type in the name of the anchor.
    • Finish for each of the places you want to link to.
  • Create each link to this anchor by selecting the text you want to link.
  • Select the "insert link" button, with earth and closed chain.
  • In the dialog box, from the "Link Type" drop down box, select "link to an anchor in the text"
  • Then use the "select an anchor by anchor name" to select your desired link.
  • Then select "ok"

Browsing for links within the site:

We encourage that you "browse server" for links that will go to pages or objects within the College of Education page. This links through the Unique ID number for that object, so if that object is ever moved, the link will still work.

  • From the "insert link" dialog box, you will want to select "browse server"
  • Then use the next window to browse for the object.
  • The right hand side shows your current folder.
  • The left hand side shows the next folder up.
  • The little folder with the arrow at the very top of the left hand list will take you up 1 level.
  • You must select a page, so if you are trying to link to the default page of a folder, you must select the page with the most similar name as the folder.

Pasting in URL’s for links outside the site:

For links outside of the site, you will need to either type in or cut and paste in the link into the URL space of the "insert link" dialog box.

Setting up links to open a new window:

You can set links from the body content section of a page to open in a new tab for the user. This way, the user is not completely removed from your page. This may especially be a good idea for links outside of your site.

  • From the "insert link" dialog box, select the "target" tab at the top (next to the "link info" tab)
  • Then select "New Window (_blank)" from the "target" drop down box.

Pasting in text from Word or other software programs:

Use the select all icon to select all your text, and then hit the "erase formatting" icon.

Using Lists:

How to get out of an ordered/bulleted list

  • Hit enter or Shift-enter. This will create a new bullet or numbered item.
  • Type some text here. Then select just the new line and then hit the numbered or bulleted list icon.

How to embed an ordered/bulleted list

  • put your cursor at the end of the line where you want the new list.
  • Hit “shift” and “enter” at the same time.
  • Add the list items
  • Select the items and then hit the list icon.
