NCATE Editor's Help (Spring 2011)

NCATE Site (requires login)

Content Management System

We are using the Plone content management system that is available through WebLion.

Logging In

  • Always use Firefox as the Web Browser
  • Use your Penn State user ID and Password.
  • Contact Kelly if those do not work.

Editor's Help

At the bottom of every page is the "Editor's Help" Link. There will be a special NCATE page there for you.

How the Site Works

  • whenever you add anything to the site, it by default goes into the navigation and on to the folder view
  • You can navigate the site by clicking on the links in the navigation or on the pages.
  • Use BREADCRUMBS to go to the various levels throughout the site since navigation will show you only the current page level

Adding Items to the Site

You have access to add 3 things:

  • folder
  • page
  • file (pdf)
  • Kelly will have a better idea than I will as to when you might add a folder or page. I think you will be adding mostly, if not all pdf's.

Adding a folder

  • How to add a folder
  • naming conventions for folders - use your program name
  • title always shows up in navigation and on folder home view
  • Always include a description
  • Folder display - use standard view

Adding a pdf

Updating a pdf

  • Updating a pdf (see second set of instructions on this page)
  • This is MUCH easier for you

Adding a page

  • How to add a page
  • include a title
  • include a description
  • body content - make sure to repeat title here and style it as an H2
  • Make sure to use the Paste as Plain Text option (clipboard with a T, in editing toolbar)

View Tab

The View Tab just shows you an approximation of what the user will see if it is a folder and page. If it is a pdf or other type of file, it will give you an option to download the file.

Contents Tab

  • The Contents Tab will show you a tabular view of everything in that folder.
  • Visit this tab to cut and paste items from one folder to another.
  • Use this tab to delete items from the folder.

Edit Tab

  • NOTE: Changing the title of a document (page, folder, or file) will change it in the navigation.
  • For files: The Edit Tab will let you change the title and description, or upload a new version of the file.
  • For folders: The Edit Tab will let you change the title and description of a folder.
  • For Pages: The Edit Tab will let you change the title and description of a page, as well as edit content on the page.

Editing Pages

Tabs and Options to Ignore

  • State - don't need to worry about this because site will be private
  • Properties tab
  • Aliases tab
