Carroll teaches human-computer interaction, the design of information and user interfaces, and social and professional issues in computing. His research includes human-computer interaction, especially scenario-based methods for design and development, minimalist techniques for making information efficient, computer support for collaborative work and education, community-oriented computing, and social impacts of computing.

McNeese studies human interaction with information technology in complex environments, particularly collaborative systems that bring together the confluences of cognition, computation, collaboration, and context for given fields of practice - deriving advanced human-computer interfaces through innovations of affective computing, artificial intelligence, and computer-supported cooperative work perspectives.

McNeese is a scholar in the area of learning sciences and is advocate and practitioner of problem-based learning and computer supported cooperative learning. As such, his methodological interests and activities are wide-ranging spanning from ethnographic field study to experimental designs to protocol analysis to cognitive modeling to scaled world simulations.

McNeese has taught cognitive systems engineering, design engineering projects, cognitive engineering of cooperative systems, human-computer interaction, and introduction to information sciences and technology. He also is interested in teaching engineering psychology, experimental-cogntiive psychology, industrial psychology, problem solving, memory and learning, cognitive science, psychology of design, and human factors.
