Family Literacy and Intergenerational Learning

Institute staff has supported Pennsylvania Family Literacy programs since 1989, when the first federally funded William F. Goodling Even Start Family Literacy Program was funded in Reading, PA. Institute staff continued to provide local evaluation for Even Start programs until the federal program was defunded in 2011. Staff also provided assistance on program development of Even Start and, since 1998, to state funded family literacy programs. The Institute conducted an annual evaluation of all of Pennsylvania's family literacy programs (1998-2011) and was instrumental in drafting family literacy indicators of program quality and performance standards. In addition, staff provided assistance to family literacy programs, working collaboratively with the Tuscarora and Lancaster Lebanon Intermediate Units, in using action research to guide improvements in family literacy practices. Support for family literacy programs continues through the Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy.
