Moore Named Senior Fellow by European Distance and E-Learning Network

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Michael G. Moore, professor of adult education, has been granted the title of Senior Fellow by the European Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN). He received his honor in June at the EDEN Annual Conference, held in Valencia, Spain.

EDEN grants the title of Senior Fellow in recognition of a scholar’s contributions to the development of open, distance, and e-learning in Europe and for valued commitment and support to the network's evolution and progress.

EDEN’s mission is to share knowledge and improve understanding for professionals in distance and e-learning across the whole of Europe and beyond, and to promote policy and practice for this field of endeavor. With more than 200 institutional members and over 1,100 members in the Network of Academics and Professionals, EDEN holds annual conferences attracting more than 550 participants; holds additional conferences on research and on the schools sector every two years; has launched and supports the "European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning" (EURODL); and provides support and advice for a range of projects in the European sphere.

Moore is widely known in Europe for his leadership in the scholarly study of distance education. Before joining Penn State in 1986, he worked for nine years at the British Open University. He published the first statement of theory about distance education in 1972. In 1986 he founded "The American Journal of Distance Education," and continues today as the journal’s editor.

A second Penn State achievement at the 2010 EDEN conference was the election of Morten Flate Paulsen as EDEN’s new president. Paulsen, now professor of online education at NKI Nettstudier in Norway, is an alumnus of Penn State’s Adult Education program in the College of Education.
