Congratulations Faculty - Spring 2013

Soo-yong Byun, assistant professor of educational theory and policy, Kimberly Powell, associate professor of language, culture & society, and Kai Schafft, associate professor of educational leadership, have been awarded a Research Initiation Grant. The trio is collaborating on a project titled “Literacy Through Photography: Examining a Multimodal Approach to Literacy Enhancement and School Attachment Within a Disadvantaged Rural Setting.”

Ellysa Stern Cahoy, education and behavioral sciences librarian at Penn State and assistant director of the Pennsylvania Center for the Book, has won the 2013 Association of College and Research Libraries/Instruction Section Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian Award. The award recognizes a librarian who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of instruction in a college or research library. Cahoy will receive a $1,000 award and a plaque at the annual American Library Association conference in June.

Richard A. Duschl, the Kenneth B. Waterbury Chaired Professor in Secondary Education, has been extended a rotation appointment as director, Division of Research on Learning, by the National Science Foundation.

Jackie Edmondson, associate dean for undergraduate studies, has been named a winner of the 2013 Achieving Women Award – Administrator, presented by Penn State’s Commission for Women. The Achieving Women Award recognizes women who have shown notable leadership and accomplishment in their fields, and have gone beyond the requirements of employment duties and responsibilities in their support of the University’s diversity efforts, promotion of equal opportunity, or contribution to human causes and public service activities.

Brandon Hunt, professor of education in the Counselor Education, Rehabilitation and Human Services Program, has been selected to receive the 2013 Penn State Excellence in Advising Award. The award, established by the former Undergraduate Student Government’s Academic Assembly and sponsored by each college, annually honors one full-time faculty member and one full-time professional adviser from any Penn State location who have at least two years of advising experience.

Mark Kissling, assistant professor of education, has received the 2012 BMI Foundation’s Woody Guthrie Research Fellowship. Through the fellowship, Kissling will spend three weeks researching at the Woody Guthrie Archives in Tulsa, Okla., over the course of the next year. This will advance a project Kissling is working on titled, “Guthrie’s ‘Patriotism’ in U.S. Schools.”

Beverly Lindsay, professor of higher education, has been invited as an Eminent Senior Scholar to mentor graduate students and young professionals at the annual conference of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) in New Orleans in March 2013. Dr. Lindsay, along with Dr. Vandra Masemman (Professor at the University of Toronto) will mentor doctoral students from Claremont Graduate School of Education to help them prepare manuscripts for publications and professional portfolios. Dr. Lindsay is a former President of the CIES.

Gwen Lloyd, professor of mathematics education, is the recipient of the 2013 Undergraduate Program Leadership Award. The award recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated exemplary leadership benefiting a Penn State undergraduate degree program. It recognizes those individuals who have major responsibilities for the delivery of undergraduate education within a unit and who are providing leadership that has transformed or revitalized the undergraduate program in some way.

Barbara Van Horn, co-director and senior research assistant of Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy and Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy, and a life member of the Pennsylvania Association for Adult Continuing Education (PAACE), received the association's Joan Y. Leopold Service Award at PAACE's 2013 state conference. PAACE's Family Literacy Division also feted Van Horn with a special presentation of Pennsylvania Center for the Book's (Penn State) Baker's Dozen of the best children's picture books of 2012 for her long service to family literacy in the Commonwealth.
