College of Education Offers Children’s Summer Reading Camp

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State College of Education’s Reading Camp returns this summer, offering opportunities for intermediate, primary, and middle school students to strengthen their reading and writing skills. The program is scheduled to run from July 9 to August 2, every Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Chambers Building on the University Park campus.
The Reading Camp, designed for reluctant readers and those experiencing challenges developing their literacy, offers a low student-to-teacher ratio. The camp’s teachers are enrolled in the capstone experience for Reading Specialist certification.
The goal of the camp is to provide children with opportunities for success by supporting them in their literacy learning while involving them in a community of readers and writers.
Students enrolled in the reading camp learn reading comprehension strategies and word solving in large groups, small groups, and while involved in independent activities based on their interests and needs. Activities in previous years have included constructing museum exhibits, theater performances, writing and publishing personal magazines, and individual research projects.
