Niles Co-Authors New Edition of Career Development Book

Spencer G. Niles, distinguished professor of counselor education, has co-authored the fourth edition of a book that deals with the practical applications of career counseling to the lives of individuals being served and to career counseling practitioners.

The book, Career Development Interventions in the 21st Century (4th ed.), presents theories, assessments, planning tools, resources, and technologies relevant to modern career development.

Niles’ co-author is JoAnn Harris-Bowlsbey, professor of counselor education at Loyola College in Maryland. The 544-page book is published by Merrill.

With four chapters devoted to career development in educational settings, Career Development Interventions analyzes the aspects of career development interventions for audiences in the elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as in higher education and community settings. It includes strategies for implementing career counseling techniques and creating and designing career-development programs.

In addition to producing the book’s text, Niles and Harris-Bowlsbey developed career counseling videos in which leading career counselors and vocational psychologists work with diverse clients conducting live career counseling sessions. These resources are included with the ancillary materials for the book.

Niles is head of Penn State’s Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education. He is editor of the Journal of Counseling & Development and is past-editor of The Career Development Quarterly. Niles has served as president of the National Career Development Association.
