Reading Camp for Elementary Students Coming this Summer

The College of Education is offering the Penn State Reading Camp for elementary school students from July 8 through August 1.

Summer Reading CampUNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The College of Education is offering the Penn State Reading Camp for elementary school students again in 2013. The camp is scheduled July 8–August 1, Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Chambers Building on the University Park campus.

The Penn State Reading Camp is designed for reluctant readers and those who are experiencing challenges in developing their literacy.

“Our goal is to help students address the question, ‘What are reading and writing for?’” said Coordinator Kathleen Shannon.

Students enrolled in the Reading Camp read across all types of texts in order to become experts. Students then can make museum exhibits and express their new expertise through writing nonfiction, fiction, scripts, poetry, lyrics, maps, diagrams, and more. Students will have a chance to work with our artist-in-residence who helps them represent their new knowledge in installation art, sculpture, painting, and collage as well as print.

Through this process, students learn decoding, comprehension, and fluency strategies while participating in large-group, small-group, and independent activities based on their interests and needs, according to Shannon.

The Reading Camp offers a 3-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. The camp’s teachers are Penn State master's degree students who are enrolled in the capstone experience for Reading Specialist certification.

The enrollment fee is $50. For more information or to register for camp, contact Shannon by e-mail at kds12@psu.edu.
