UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Once again this summer, the College of Education is offering the Penn State Reading Camp for elementary school students. The camp is scheduled July 6–29, each Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Chambers Building on the University Park campus.

The Penn State Reading Camp is designed for reluctant readers and those who are experiencing some challenges in developing their literacy.

“Our goals for the Reading Camp experience include supporting children in their literacy learning while involving them in a community of readers and writers, providing opportunities for them to be successful,” said Coordinator Kathleen Shannon, instructor of language and literacy education.

DSC_6606.JPGStudents enrolled in the Reading Camp learn word solving and comprehension strategies while participating in large-group, small-group, and independent activities based on their interests and needs. Activities in previous years have included writing and publishing group stories, preparing a reader’s theater performance, constructing museum exhibits, conducting experiments and research on rocks, and managing individual research projects on animals, sports, and other topics.

The Reading Camp offers a 3-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. The camp’s teachers are Penn State master’s students who are enrolled in the capstone experience for Reading Specialist certification.

The enrollment fee is $50. For more information or to register for camp, contact Shannon (phone 865-2184 or e-mail kds12@psu.edu).
