Hayes Co-Edits New Book on Psychotherapy Research

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State researchers Jeffrey A. Hayes, professor of counseling psychology in the College of Education, and Louis G. Castonguay, professor of psychology in the College of Liberal Arts, and two of the six co-editors of a newly released book titled Bringing Psychotherapy Research to Life.
Published by the American Psychological Association, the 378-page book is intended to help clinicians better grasp the larger picture of psychotherapy research from the past 50 years. It highlights the work of 28 psychotherapy researchers and shows how their research programs have changed the field of psychotherapy. The book illustrates how research has addressed a variety of matters--such as what types of patients benefit from therapy, how relationship problems can best be handled, and under which circumstances emotions can be deepened. It also describes how a therapist fosters insight and facilitates behavioral change.
Other co-editors are J. Christopher Muran (Adelphi University), Lynne Angus (York University in Toronto, Canada), Nicholas Ladany, (Lehigh University), and Timothy Anderson (Ohio University).
