Fourteen Graduate Students in the CI ED Program Present Papers at Conference

Students in the Comparative & International Education (CI ED) program at Penn State were selected to present papers at the 2008 Comparative and International Education Conference in New York, March 17-21, hosted by Teacher’s College, Columbia University.

According to the Comparative and International Education Society’s Web site, the theme of this year’s conference was “Gaining Educational Equity Around the World.” The meetings “placed special emphasis on the theme of educational equity within and among regions and countries, focusing on the impact of factors such as gender, race, ethnicity, economics, disability, and urbanization.” The call for proposals encouraged presentations that addressed “the measurement, extent, origins, and solutions for gaining educational equity on a local, national, regional, and international scale.”

 “This conference, which brings scholars from all over the world, offers great opportunities to our graduate students to present their research and to meet potential, future employers and publishers,” said Program Chair Ladislaus Semali. “The conference is very competitive and our students usually do well.”

Students were sponsored by CI ED and the University Park Allocations Committee (UPAC). UPAC, a student-run organization, distributes funds received through the student activity fee to student groups for several purposes such as attending conferences and conventions.

Comparative & International Education is a joint graduate degree program at Penn State. The program allows students to earn dual degrees in CI ED as well as in another field, such as education, health and human development, and agricultural sciences. This inter-departmental approach to education aims to train scholars who advance our basic knowledge about schooling and education around the globe.
