Cycle-thon Benefits SCOPE

Students, parents, alumni and community members will be running, walking and biking throughout State College on April 17 to benefit the Summer College Opportunity Program in Education (SCOPE) as a part of the College of Education’s sixth annual Cycle-Thon.
SCOPE benefits high school students from underrepresented populations who are interested in careers in education. Through a four-week intensive academic program, these students have the opportunity to live on Penn State's University Park campus, take college courses, prepare for the SAT, and learn time-management and study skills.
Beginning at 10 a.m., participants will have the option to take the bike route (13.5 miles) or participate in running or walking in a 5K (3.3 miles). Neither option is competitive, but participants will be informed of their completion time if interested.
Other activities for the day include children’s games and activities, face painting, meeting the Nittany Lion, awards and prizes, a picnic, and a chance to see rare and unique bicycles.
Registration, which includes all of the day’s activities and a Cycle-Thon T-shirt, is $25 for adults/non-students, $20 for college students, and $15 for K-12 students. The event is free for children five and under. Persons interested in registering can do so at www.ed.psu.edu/educ/cyclethon/
If you cannot participate in Cycle-Thon but would like to get involved, the College of Education is looking for T-shirt sponsors. Sponsorship is a minimum of $25 and offers the sponsor’s name or organization’s name on the back of the official Cycle-Thon 2011 T-shirt. Student clubs and class blocks are competing to see who can raise the most money for the T-shirts, and the winning group will be announced April 17.
