OCA test dates + Courses that lead to the Vocational Instructional I Certificate
Occupational Competency Exam - Fall 2012
September 7, 2012: Deadline for submitting application, test fee and all supporting documentation. If applying for an Emergency Permit, this MUST be done at the same time.
October 6, 2012: A three-hour written examination will be administered at University Park. Exact time and place will be announced to eligible candidates approximately two weeks before the date of testing. The only reference
materials permitted are the Machinery Handbook (Machine Trades exam and Drafting exams), the
NEC ⎯ National Electrical Code Handbook (Electrical exams), and the Technical Table and
Charts Card. Hand-held calculators are permitted.
Oct/Nov: A five- to six-hour performance examination will be (Approximate) administered at selected vocational schools throughout the central region. The exact dates, times and locations will be announced to eligible candidates approximately two weeks before testing. Please note that Saturdays and weekdays after the close of the school day are definite possibilities, as testing locations and times are based on the availability and/
or schedule of examiners.

New Teacher Workshop
All newly hired CTE teachers must begin with the New Teacher Workshop, a one-week course offered at Penn State’s University Park campus, August 6-10, 2012. Also teachers, who were hired late last year and missed the New Teacher Workshop, must take it this year. Contact Kristy Croyle, 863-0805, knb14@psu.edu, as soon as possible to register for this two-credit course.
Competency-Based Teacher Education
The Workforce Education and Development courses that lead to Vocational Instructional I certificate are offered for your convenience at your school. An experienced Career and Technical Education teacher, called a Field Resource Person (FRP) will be your instructor via six face-to-face meetings during the semester. Between meetings, you will complete assignments that help you learn the basics of becoming a career and technical education instructor. Speak with your FRP to decide which of the following courses is most appropriate for you in the spring semester.
