Associate Professor of Education (Language & Literacy Education)
265 Chambers Campus: University Park
Department: Curriculum & Instruction Dr. Hade has taught in elementary schools and junior high schools, colleges and universities in Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Co-chair of the NCTE/Children's Book Council Committee, past editor of the Journal of Children's Literature. His research and teaching is focused upon the study of children's literature, particularly upon the nature and quality of the experiences readers have with children's literature, the social contexts (especially classrooms) within which readers read and interpret literature and the interpretive stances children and teachers assume towards a piece of literature. Recent work has examined ideological differences among advocates of literature-based instruction, and how children's reading is shaped by the manners in which writers produce, scholars critique, and teachers mediate children's literature and the assumptions about children as readers held by these adults.
