Dr. Nelson is a former public school teacher in Chicago. He has an appointment in American Studies and was Fulbright Senior Lecturer at University of Iceland in 1983 and for Ministry of Education Research and Church, Norway, 1990-91. Dr. Nelson has taught courses in social studies curriculum, curriculum history and social studies methods, was on the NCSS Board of Directors, and was a former president of the Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies. Dr. Nelson was also the 2007-08 Laszlo Orszagh Distinguished Chair of American Studies at the University of Debrecen (Hungary) under a Fulbright grant award.
