Department: Curriculum & Instruction Dr. Lloyd is a professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Penn State. She teaches courses for future elementary and secondary teachers of mathematics, seminars for doctoral students in mathematics education, and online courses for graduate students through Penn State’s World Campus. She is also the director of the Childhood and Early Adolescent Education program at Penn State. Gwen's research examines teacher education and professional development in the context of ongoing curricular reforms in mathematics education. From 2000 to 2010, she was PI of two NSF-funded projects focused on preservice teachers' interactions with K-12 mathematics textbooks and curriculum materials. Recent books emerging from this line of work include Mathematics Teachers at Work (Routledge, 2009) and Curriculum-Based Activities and Resources for Preservice Math Teachers (NCTM, 2011). She recently coauthored two books that focus on teachers' mathematical learning: Developing Essential Understandings of Expressions, Equations, and Functions for Teachers of Mathematics in Grades 6-8 (NCTM, 2011) and Developing Essential Understandings of Functions for Teachers of Mathematics in Grades 9-12 (NCTM, 2010). Gwen currently serves as coeditor of the Journal of Teacher Education, associate editor of the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education, and advisory team member for the STEM Scouts initiative at Penn State. In recent years, she has served as chair of the editorial panel of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, board member of AERA's Special Interest Group: Research in Mathematics Education (SIG-RME), member of the Research Committee of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, and research associate of the Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum. Before joining the faculty at Penn State in 2009, Gwen was a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Virginia Tech.
