Description
The College of Education’s Faculty Mentoring
Program is designed to facilitate the professional growth and
career advancement of faculty members in the college. The Mentoring
Program sponsors a New Faculty Orientation each Fall and a series
of faculty development workshops throughout the year. It also
includes an individualized mentoring program in which junior and
senior faculty participate as mentees and mentors, respectively.

The primary goal of the mentoring program is to provide a supportive
academic environment for new faculty, through provision of advice, support,
and career guidance by supportive, knowledgeable senior faculty members.
The New Faculty Orientation provides information about resources available
within the college and across the university for research and teaching
activities, with attention to resources that facilitate management of
work, family, and personal demands. Faculty Development Workshops are
offered throughout the year and focus on such topics as preparing the
dossier for 2nd and 4th year reviews; using technology in the classroom;
building research networks; grant-writing, etc. Individual mentors are
available to Assistant Professors in the college.
The purpose of individualized mentoring is to provide new faculty members
with an experienced colleague who may serve as a sounding board and provide
advice about how to function effectively in the college’s organizational
structure, manage their professional responsibilities, increase awareness
of available resources for professional development, and achieve greater
satisfaction with their career programs. Mentors are available to Assistant
Professors, and participation in college mentoring program activities
is voluntary. Interested mentors and junior faculty who would like to
request a mentor should complete the appropriate on-line forms.
