To build, in cooperation with the National Center for Family Literacy, the capacity of the field to provide high quality, research-based instruction and program development in family literacy. For example:
The Pennsylvania Center for the Book’s Family Literacy Activities were developed in cooperation with the College of Education’s Goodling Institute*. These research-based resources were designed for parents and educators working with parents and young children. Resources include (1) sample integrated lesson plans for Adult Education, Parenting Education, Early Childhood Education, and Interactive Literacy (also known as PACT Time); (2) developmental information guides for parents and practitioners; (3) recommended booklists for children’s books and parent resources; and (4) downloadable activities based on high quality children’s literature.

The National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL) funded the Goodling Institute to develop and pilot a Study Circle Guide — Rethinking Instruction and Participation for Adult Basic Education [PDF 740KB]. This guide is one of a series of study circle guides that NCSALL has developed and made available on their website. Its purpose is to help staff developers and practitioners organize and conduct Study Circles so that practitioners can read, discuss, and use research to improve their practice. The Practitioner's Guide to Interactive Literacy Activities (ILAs) provides a broad overview of ILAs and suggests ways to implement ILAs more effectively. Specifically, the Guide summarizes the research basis for ILAs, describes what ILAs entail and the ways in which they are being used in family literacy, provides examples of ILA activities with a solid research base, and offers suggestions for designing culturally appropriate ILAs.
