EXPOSITORY PRESENTATION (Telling)

Expository presentation is a lecture, presentation or telling strategy used during instruction. The teacher is in control of presenting the subject matter and directs the students through the lesson. A rule is presented with an example and then practice is provided. The teacher focuses the students’ attention on the key points of the subject and may use graphics, diagrams, or other representations to elaborate on the subject.

Definition / Attributes: Expository Presentation

Expository Presentation is a teaching strategy where the teacher presents students with the subject matter rules and provides examples that illustrate the rules. Examples include pictorial relationships, application of the rules, context through historical information, and prerequisite information. Examples are provided to give contextual elaboration and to help students see the subject matter from many different perspectives.

How can the World Wide Web support . . . Expository Presentation?

Lesson Component Reflection Questions
(Use these questions to note ideas on how to use Expository Presentation for a component of your lesson.)

Learning outcomes: (What will the students be expected to learn as a result of this lesson?)

Lesson description: (How, using Expository Presentation, will the lesson facilitate the learning outcomes?)

Web resources: (What types of web resources will support the presentation strategy and learning outcomes?)

Web sites that describe, provide examples of, and demonstrate how to use the WWW with Expository Presentation.

Why does Expository Presentation enhance instruction?
  • Instruction is more effective when it contains presentation followed by examples and practice. The Component Display Theory (Merrill) provides a theoretical framework for the rational supporting Expository Presentation.

How can I replicate Expository Presentation lessons using existing Web resources?
  • Existing Lesson Plan on classifying galaxies, includes on-line activities – informational with references and links to related sites
  • Existing tutorial on radar remote sensing, what it is and how it can be used

These are existing Lesson Plans available on the WWW:

How can I generate my own Expository Presentation lessons using Web resources?

Teacher creates lesson plan on how and why volcanoes erupt. A component of this lesson is to present volcano facts to the students. To enhance this lesson with Web resources:

  • Tell students to review the Pinatubo volcano site then review the volcano web site and note the characteristics of active volcanoes, define terms associated with volcanoes, describe the process that volcanoes go through during eruption, describe the effects erupting volcanoes have on the environment. Ask them to collect pictures and stories from the site that support their answers.
  • Send students record answers to the questions and provide supporting examples (pictures, video clips, text) of the rules to share with the class.

These are examples of informational Web sites that could be used to tell students about volcanoes:

What are other ideas of using Web resources for Expository Presentation?
  • Content and activities on comets – informational
  • Web site that present rules of flight: Information sites
