CREATING A WEB-ENHANCED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT LESSON PLAN

Creating lesson plans is nothing new to teachers. Requirements for documenting what goes on in the classroom varies from state to state, district to district. On a day-to-day level teachers use lesson plans to plan their days. Lesson plans help to ensure that teaching and learning requirements are met. They are also used as a communication device for sharing activities with administrators, other teachers, and substitute teachers. Although the format and level of detail varies across teachers, the information, such as learner outcomes and teaching strategies is critical to planning for effective integration of web resources into the classroom.

The lesson plan format provided to support WELES includes several components. (see diagram on the next page) Each is critical in determining the best way to use web resources to enhance the learning environment. The components include:

An important point to consider is that enhancing teaching and learning with web resources does not mean completely changing instructional strategies. Web resources simply provide a rich enhancement to the classroom and can be easily adapted into existing lesson plans. Web resources can: The WELES lesson plan format is designed to facilitate recording of lesson plans and methods of incorporating web resources into lesson. The next few pages contain a step-by-step walkthrough of each section of the Lesson Plan format and is supported by an example aeronautics-based lesson plan. As you review the components of the lesson plan reflect on how your current strategy and format for recording lesson plans is similar. Also, think about how web resources could enhance lesson that you already use in your classroom

The example lesson plan used in the next few pages is the second part of a lesson on the forces of flight. The first part (not presented) had students learn about the forces of flight and build model gliders. In this part of the lesson the students will demonstrate their understanding of the forces of flight by determining the variables of the glider and environment that effect flight, flying their gliders, and gathering flight data. The third part of the lesson (not presented) is where the students would interpret the data they collected.
