The America's Job Bank

http://www.ajb.dni.us

Description:

For more than 60 years, the state Employment Service has helped people and jobs find each other. Through a variety of services available to employers and job seekers, the Employment Service continues to be an integral part of the labor exchange process in America. Since the Interstate Job Bank (IJB) was established in 1979, the states have recognized the need to offer employers national exposure of their job openings to help them find the employees they need to help their business' succeed. Publicizing job listings on a national basis has also proven to be beneficial to the American labor force because it provides individuals with an increased number of opportunities to find work and realize their career goals.

The program has continually evolved with technological advances to provide expanded and easier access by job seekers. In 1993, the Employment Service renamed the IJB to America's Job Bank (AJB), in recognition of the national status it had achieved. Today, America's Job Bank continues to improve access to the Employment Service with the establishment of this Internet product.

The America's Job Bank computerized network links the 1,800 state Employment Service offices. It provides job seekers with the largest pool of active job opportunities available anywhere. For employers it provides rapid, national exposure for job openings. The 'nationwide' listings in America's Job Bank contain information on approximately 100,000 jobs.

In addition to the Internet, America's Job Bank is available on computer systems in public libraries, colleges and universities, high schools, shopping malls, and other places of public access. AJB is also available at transition offices on military bases worldwide.

Community-Builders

http://www.vision-nest.com/cbw/CommunityBuilding.html

Description:

The Community Builders Website is an electronic resource centerbuilt around the recently published book on "Community Building: Renewing Spirit and Learning in Business" (New Leaders Press,1995). This site is dedicated to co-creative dialogues on the business, cultural, technical, and knowledge management issues of the current transformation of "command-and-control" organizations into networked communities of practice and commitment.

From the bookjacket: "As workers at all levels in organizational hierarchies experience a sense of disconnectedness from one another in the pursuit of the 'bottom line,' a yearning has developed among the populations of companies and other workplaces. This yearning originates from a need to feel a part of a community. This fundamental human need to feel connected to others is driving good people out of organizations or, worse yet, into unhealthy lifestyles should they resign themselves to endure the separations they find at work and seek ways to 'numb out' the pain."

Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations

http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/

Description:

The Cornell ILR School's homepage is a great first stop for any HR specialist's initial road trip on the information superhighway, primarily because it offers a terrific directory and gateway to other workforce/workplace related Internet sites.

Through a directory database referred to as "Internet Sites of Special Interest to Industrial Relations Practitioners, Scholars, and Students," this website provides gopher, web, FTP, and discussion site HTML listings in a number of HR and industrial relations topic areas. Current listings include education and training, government policies, actions, and information; human resource management; labor-management relations; labor unions and employee organizations; laws and legislation; management science; and safety and health. There are also a number of areas under construction including industrial engineering, compensation and fringe benefits, and behavior at work.

When you click on an area you see a hypertext listing of site names. For example, in the safety and health topic area, the two current listings are for OSHA and the ErgoWeb at the University of Utah. Click on a site name and away you go.

It is obvious that the listings will grow as the Internet develops, but already this site is a valuable source for organized "surfing" in the HR topic area.

By the way, there is also information content on this site as well -- the What's New section currently features the report from the Department of Labor's Glass Ceiling Commission.
