The Penn State/Muncy Tutoring Program started peer tutoring sessions at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) Muncy in April of 2019. The SCI at Muncy is a medium/maximum security facility for adult female offenders.  It is located in the borough of Muncy, Lycoming County, approximately 18 miles east of Williamsport.

The program is comprised of inmates who begin with individual interviews with the program coordinator. After sincere interest in the program is determined, tutors and learners take different tracks, either completing intake, orientation and testing sessions for learners, or tutor training for tutors.

The tutoring program is funded through a two year grant the Penn State Career Pathways Program received from the PA Department of Education. The program is designed so that trained tutors work with learners for at least three sessions a week, totaling three hours a week of tutoring. Participation in the program is voluntary and sessions are focused on the strengths and goals of the learner.  At any given time, the program serves approximately 25 learners and has close to the same number of available tutors.

Participants report that the program is a "breath of fresh air" and provides a very welcome environment of motivation and positivity.
